MARWOOD, a township in that part of the parish of GAINFORD which is in the south-western division of DARLINGTON ward, county palatine of DURHAM, 3 miles (N. N. W.) from Barnard-Castle, containing 212 inhabitants. Barnard castle and demesne are within this township; and on an eminence adjoining the town of Barnard-Castle, some vestiges of the ancient town of Marwood, once a considerable place, have been discovered; near the same spot is an old chapel, but divine service has not been performed in it for a great number of years.
