MAYLAND, a parish in the hundred of DENGIE, county of ESSEX, 4 miles (N. W. by N.) from Burnharn, containing 218 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the jurisdiction of the Commissary of Essex and Herts, concurrently with the Consistorial Court of the Bishop of London, rated in the king's books at £13. 6. 8., endowed with £200 private benefaction, and £ 200 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Governors of St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London. The church is dedicated to St. Barnabas. Dr. John Gauden, successively Bishop of Exeter and Worcester, supposed by some the author of " Eikon Basilike," was born here in 1605; he died in 1662.
