MELLS, a parish in the hundred of MELLS-and-LEIGH, county of SOMERSET, 3 miles (W. N. W.) from Frome, containing 1147 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, with the perpetual curacy of Leigh upon Mendip, in the archdeaconry of Wells, and diocese of Bath and Wells, rated in the king's books at £33. 16. 8. T. S. Horner, Esq. was patron in 1824. The church is dedicated to St. Andrew. There are extensive coalworks, and iron-manufactories, principally for agricultural implements, in this parish. Two fairs are held annually, on the Monday after Trinity week, and on Michaelmas day. The Frome here flows between rocks that rear their summits to a great height, somewhat resembling St. Vincent's rock below Bristol.
