MELTON-CONSTABLE, a parish in the hundred of HOLT, county of NORFOLK, 5 miles (S. W. by S.) from Holt, containing, with Little Burgh, 111 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, with Little Burgh, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich, rated in the king's books at £6, and in the patronage of Sir Jacob Astley, Bart. The church is dedicated to St. Peter. This parish is said to derive its name from the office of constable having been bestowed on the family of De Mealton by the Conqueror.
