MOORHOUSE, a township in the parish of BURGH
upon the SANDS, ward and county of CUMBERLAND, 4
miles (W. by N.) from Carlisle, containing 254 inhabitants.
There is a meeting-house for the Society of
Friends, in which Thomas Sturdy, who died in 1684,
after suffering many persecutions; and Jonathan Ostell,
who died in 1755, distinguished themselves as pious
and unyielding preachers.
