MUNDEN (GREAT), a parish in the hundred of BROADWATER, county of HERTFORD, 2 miles (W. byN.) from Puckeridge, containing ,-515 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Huntingdon, and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £21. 9 7.} and in the patronage of the Crown. The church is dedicated to St. Nicholas. At Rownay are slight remains of a Benedictine nunnery, founded in honour of St. John the Baptist, by Conan, Duke of Britain and Earl of Richmond, in the reign of Henry II., which falling into decay, through mismanagement, was surrendered in the time of Henry VI, and its possessions appropriated. to the maintenance of a chantry priest. till the dissolution, when they were valued at £13. 10. 9. per annum.
