NETTLESTEAD, a parish in the hundred of TWYFORD, lathe of AYLESFORD, county of KENT, 5 miles (W.S.W.) from Maidstone, containing 255 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, united to that of West Barming, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Rochester, rated in the king's books at £12. 10. 10. Mrs. Bouverie was patroness in 1820. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is in the later style of English architecture, and the windows exhibit some fine specimens of stained glass of the time of Edward I. The navigable river Medway is crossed by Brand bridge on the south of the parish.
