NEWTON-in-the-THISTLES, or NEWTON-REGIS, a parish in the Tamworth division of the hundred of HEMLINGFORD, county of WARWICK, 5 miles (N. E. by E.) from Tamworth, containing 410 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Coventry, and diocese of Lichfield and Coventry, rated in the king's books at £14. 1. 5., and in the patronage of Sir F. Burdett, Bart. The church is dedicated to St. Mary NEWTON by TOFT, a parish in the northern division of the wapentake of WALSHCROFT, parts of LINDSEY, county of LINCOLN, 4 miles ,(W. S. W.) from Market-Rasen, containing 70 inhabitants. The living is a discharged rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £4. 10. 10., and endowed with £ 200 royal bounty. Tyrwhit Smith Esq. and others were patrons in 1809. The church is dedicated to St. Michael. John Holdsworth, in 1748, bequeathed £200 for teaching poor children.
