NUNTHORPE, a chapelry in the parish of AYTON, western division of the liberty of LANGBAURGH, North riding of the county of YORK, 4 miles (N. N. E.) from Stokesley, containing 1J.O inhabitants, The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry of Cleveland, and diocese of York, endowed with £1000 royal bounty, and in the patronage of T. Simpson and T. Masterman, Esqrs. The chapel, dedicated to St. Mary, is much dilapidated. This place, anciently called Thorpe, received its distinguishing appellation about 1162, from a Cistercian nunnery, then removed hither from Hutton.
