OCKLEY, a parish in the first division of the hundred of WOTTON, county of SURREY, 6 miles (S. by W.) from Dorking, containing 642 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Surrey, and diocese of Winchester, rated in the king's books at £16. 5. 2., and in the patronage of the Master and Fellows of Clare Hall, Cambridge. The church, dedicated to St. Margaret, has lately received an addition of one hundred and fifty-four free sittings, the Incorporated Society for the enlargement of churches and char pels having granted £100 towards defraying the expense. Eight children are taught for £8. 8. a year, the produce of £100, bequeathed by Elizabeth Eversted in 1721. On Holmbury Hill are vestiges of a Roman encampment; and a battle is stated to have taken place here, in 851, between the Saxons and the Danes, which terminated in the defeat of the former, with great slaughter.
