ORRELL, a township in that part of the parish of WIGAN which is in the hundred of WEST-DERBY, county palatine of LANCASTER, 3 miles (W.) from Wigan, containing 2106 inhabitants. There is a place of worship for Independents. At Orrell Mount is an establishment of French Benedictine nuns, who, driven by the Revolution from their native country, first settled at Heath in Yorkshire, and in 1821 removed hither. There are mines of coal in the neighbourhood.
