OVERTON, a parish (formerly a borough) in the hundred of OVERTON, Kingsclere division of the county of SOUTHAMPTON, 3 miles (E. N. E.) from Whitchurch, and 54 (W. S. W.) from London, containing 1341 inhabitants. This village is situated on the great western road; a manufactory for throwing-silk affords employment to the greater part of the female inhabitants. The river Test, which has its source about a mile distant, passes through the village, Pairs are held on May 4th, Whit-Monday, .and July 18th, and on October 22nd is a considerable fair for sheep. This place formerly sent two members to parliament. The living is a vicarage, with the perpetual curacy of Tadley, in the peculiar jurisdiction and patronage of the Rector, rated in the king's books at £14. 12. 3J.; the rectory is a sinecure, rated in the king's books at £29. 19.7., and in the patronage of the Bishop of Winchester. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. There is a place of worship for Independents.
