OVERTON, a parish partly in the hundred of ELSTUB-and-EVERLEY, but chiefly in that of SELKLEY, county of WILTS, 2 miles (S. by W.) from Marlborough, containing, with the chapelry of Alton-Priors, the township of Lockeridge, and the tything of Stowell, 900 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Wilts, and diocese of Salisbury, rated in the king's books at £23. 0. 5., and in the patronage of the Duke of Marlborough. The church is dedicated to St. Michael.
