OVINGHAM, a parish in the eastern division of TINDALE ward, county of NORTHUMBERLAND, comprising the chapelry of Mickley, and the townships of Dukeshagg, Eltringham, Harlowhill, Hedley, Hedley- Woodside, Horsley, Nafferton, Ovingham, Ovmgton, Prudhoe, Prudhoe-Castle, Rochester, Spittle, Welton, Whittle, and Wylam, and containing 2742 inhabitants, or which number, 265 are in the township of Ovingham, 11 miles (W.) from Newcastle upon Tyne. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Northumberland, and diocese of Durham rated in the king's books at £5. 8. 4., endowed with £200 private benefaction, £400 royal bounty, and £ 1200 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of C. W. Bigge, Esq. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. There is a place of worship for Independents. The river Tyne passes through the parish, which abounds with mines of coal. Here are a brewery, a dye-house, and bleaching-grounds. Courts leet and baron .are occasionally held; and there are two fairs, on April 26th and October 26th. The vicarage-house occupies the site of a cell of Black canons, founded by one of the Umfravilles, the revenue of which, at the dissolution, was valued at £13. 4. 8.
