PAINSHAW, a chapelry in the parish of HOUGHTON-le-SPRING, northern division of EASINGTON ward, county palatine of DURHAM, 3 miles (N. by E.) from Houghton le Spring, containing 2090 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Durham, endowed with £400 private benefaction, and £ 600 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Rector of .Houghton. The chapel was built in 1746. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. Freestone, limestone, and firestone abound here, a considerable quantity of the latter being exported. At Low Lambton, within the township, are some coal-staiths.
