PASSENHAM, a parish in the hundred of CLELEY, county of NORTHAMPTON, 1 mile (S. by W.) from Stony- Stratford, containing, with the hamlet of Denshanger and part of that of Old Stratford, 753 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Northampton, and diocese of Peterborough, rated in the king's books at £ 20, and in the patronage of Lord Viscount Maynard. The church is dedicated to St. Guthlake. The Buckingham canal passes through the parish. Six poor children are educated for £2. 10. a year, arising from a rent-charge bequeathed by John Swannell, in 1?07 This is mentioned in the Saxon Chronicle as the place where the army of Edward the Elder lay whilst he was fortifying Towcester against the Danes. Shrob Lodge, in this parish, was the seat of the learned and industrious antiquary, Browne Willis, Esq.
