PAUL, a parish in the southern division of the wapentake of HOLDERNESS, East riding of the county of YORK, comprising the chapelry of Thorn-Grumbald, and the township of Paul, and containing 745 inhabitants, of which number, 486 are in the township of Paul, 2 miles (S.W.) from Hedon. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of the East riding, and diocese of York, rated in the king's books at £10. 0. 5., and in the patronage of the Archbishop of York. The church, dedicated to St. Andrew and St. Mary, is a small cruciform structure in the later English style. There is a place of worship forWesleyan Methodists, with a Sunday school attached. Here is an extensive dock-yard, in which several ships of the line were built during the late war.
