PENDLEBURY, a township in the parish of ECCLES, hundred of SALFORD, county palatine of LANCASTER, 4 miles (N. W. by W.) from Manchester, containing 1047 inhabitants, who are chiefly employed in the manufacture and printing of cotton. There is a place of worship for Independents. The Bolton and Bury canal runs through the township. Agecroft Hall is a fine ancient fabric, supposed to have been built before the time of Richard II.: it was the birthplace of Cardinal Langley, and a staining of the royal arms, still remaining in the window of its chapel, was presented by John of Gaunt to that family.
