PENNINGTON, a parish in the hundred of LONSDALE, north of the sands, county palatine of LANCASTER, 2 miles (W. S. W.) from Ulverstone, containing 284 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry of Richmond, and diocese of Chester, endowed with £200 private benefaction, and £600 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the King, as Duke of Lancaster. The church, dedicated to St. Michael, has lately received an addition of one hundred and ten sittings, of which seventy-five are free, the Incorporated Society for the enlargement of churches and chapels having granted £100 towards defraying the expense. James Fell, in 1733, gave £60, now producing £3 per annum, for teaching poor children. Iron-ore and blue slate abound in the parish.
