PLUMBLAND, a parish in ALLERDALE ward below Darwent, county of CUMBERLAND, 6 miles (N. by E.) from Cockermouth, containing 396 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle, rated in the king's books at £20. 14. 9., and in the patronage of C. Curwen, Esq. The church is dedicated to St. Cuthbert. Coal and limestone abound here, and much of the latter is burned into lime. Freestone of an inferior quality is also obtained. There is an excellent free school, founded in 1759, by Captain John Sibson, who endowed it with lands now producing an annual income of £ 87: the school-house was erected of freestone in 1800, and contains two very spacious rooms, one for teaching the classics, the other for English and the mathematics; also an entrance porch and clock tower.
