PLUMTREE, a parish comprising the township of Clipston, in the southern division of the wapentake of BINGHAM, and the township of Normanton on the Wolds, in the northern division of the wapentake of RUSHCUFFE, county of NOTTINGHAM, 5 miles (S. S.E.) from Nottingham, and containing 579 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Nottingham, and diocese of York, rated in the king's books at £19. 19. 7. W. Elliott, Esq. -and others were patrons in 1817. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is principally in the Norman style of architecture. The villages of Plumtree and Normanton adjoin each other; at the latter the Wesleyan Methodists have a place of worship, erected in 1827. A school is supported by voluntary contributions. There are considerable rocks of limestone in the parish. Courts leet are annually held here. Plumtree is in the honour of Tutbury, duchy of Lancaster, and within the jurisdiction of a court of pleas held at Tutbury every third Tuesday, for the recovery of debts under 40s.
