PONSONBY, a parish in ALLERDALE ward above Darwent, county of CUMBERLAND, 4 miles (S.E. by S.) from Egremont, containing, with the hamlet of Newton, 150 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, hi -the archdeaconry of Richmond, and diocese of Chester, endowed with £800 private benefaction, £1000 royal bounty, and £600 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of E. Stanley, Esq. The church is a neat structure, exhibiting in the windows some ancient stained glass brought from Dalegarth Hall. The river Calder bounds the parish on the north. Freestone is obtained here; and on an eminence at Infell are some remains of a Roman camp.
