PORTINGSCALE, a township, joint with Coledale, in that part of the parish of CROSTHWAITE which is in ALLERDALE ward above Darwent, county of CUMBERLAND, Ij mile (W. by N.) from Keswick. The population is returned with Coledale. There is a place of worship forWesleyan Methodists. The village is situated on the margin of Derwentwater, of which and the lake Bassenthwaite, with the beautifully romantic tract from Swineshead to Skiddaw, there are fine prospects? from the adjacent heights.
