POTTERNE, a parish in the hundred of POTTERNE-and-CANNINGS, county of WILTS, 1 mile (S. by W.) from Devizes, comprising the tythings of Marston and Worton, and containing 1609 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, in the peculiar jurisdiction of the Bishop of Salisbury, rated in the king's books at £20. 6. 8., and in the patronage of the Bishop of Salisbury, as Prebendary of Potterne. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is an ancient cruciform structure; a new gallery has been lately erected in the north transept, at the expense of the present vicar, who has in other respects contributed to the embellishment of this venerable edifice. The Bishops of Salisbury had formerly a residence here, of which there are no traces, excepting a garden wall.
