PRESTWICH, a parish with Oldham, in the hundred
of SALFORD, county palatine of LANCASTER, 4
miles (N. W. by N.) from Manchester, containing 2724
inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry
and diocese of Chester, rated in the king's books
at £46. 4. 9., and in the patronage of Earl Grosvenor.
The church, dedicated to St. Mary, has a lofty tower,
forming a fine object in the general landscape. Here
are manufactories to a very considerable extent. (See
