RATBY, a parish in the hundred of SPARKENHOE, county of LEICESTER, 5 miles (W. by N.) from Leicester, containing, with the township of Botcheston with Newton, and the hamlet of Grooby, 1025 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in' the peculiar jurisdiction of the Lord of the Manor of Grooby, rated in the king's books at £5. 5. 10., endowed with £400 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Earl of Stamford. The church is dedicated to St. Philip. On an eminence near the village are the remains of a large Roman encampment.
