RATLINGHOPE, a parish in the hundred of PURSLOW, county of SALOP, 4 miles (N. W. by W.) from Church-Stretton, comprising the townships of Gatton and Ratlinghope, and containing 277 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Salop, and diocese of Hereford, rated in the king's books at £3. 6. 8., endowed with £800 royal bounty, and £200 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Rev, J. Hawkins. The church is dedicated to St. Margaret. A priory of Augustine canons was founded here, under the auspices of Llewellyn, Prince of North Wales, by his kinsman, Walter Corbet, one of that order.
