RIPE, a parish in the hundred of SHIPLAKE, rape of PEVENSEY, county of SUSSEX, 6 miles (W. by N.) from Haylsham, containing 364 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Lewes, and diocese of Chichester, rated in the king's books at £11. 10., and in the patronage of the Rector and Fellows of Exeter College, Oxford. The church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, is a handsome structure, partly in the decorated, and partly in the early English, style ; the windows were formerly filled with stained glass, of which there are now but slight remains. Here is a powerful chalybeate spring.
