ROSLEY, a township in the parish of WESTWARD, ALLERDALE ward, below Darwent, county of CUMBERLAND, 5 miles (E. S. E.) from Wigton, containing' 302 inhabitants. A great fair for horses, cattle, sheep, cloth &c., is held on Whit-Monday and every alternate Monday following till All Saints' day, at which it is computed that two thousand head of cattle, and five, hundred horses, are exhibited for sale; forty, acres of land on Rosley Hill were allotted for holding this fair under the enclosure act of 1811.
