RYHOPE, a township in the parish of BISHOPWEARMOUTH, northern division of EASINGTON ward, county palatine of DURHAM, 3 miles (S.) from Sunderland, containing 368 inhabitants. A chapel of ease was erected in 1826. Ryhope bay has a smooth sandy beach convenient for bathing; and the village, which is a considerable place, containing some good inns, affords excellent accommodation for those who frequent it for that purpose.
