SAMPFORD-SPINEY, a parish in the hundred of
ROBOROUGH, county of DEVON, 4 miles (E. by S.)
from Tavistock, containing 333 inhabitants. The living
is a perpetual curacy, with that of Shaugh, in the
archdeaconry of Totness, and diocese of Exeter, endowed
with £400 royal bounty, and in the patronage
of the Dean and Canons of Windsor. The church has
lately received an addition of thirty-two free sittings,
the Incorporated Society for the enlargement of
churches and chapels having granted £15 towards
defraying the expense. The parish is situated on the
verge of Dartmoor, and is intersected by the Plymouth
railway. In the vicinity is a mine where cobalt and
silver have been found.
