SANDFORD, a hamlet in the parish of WARCOP,
EAST ward, county of WESTMORLAND, 4 miles (W.
N. W.) from Brough, containing 163 inhabitants. There
are several ancient intrenchments and tumuli in the vicinity;
the largest of the latter was opened in 1?66, and '
found to contain calcined human bones and some
military weapons; near them was formerly a circle of
stones about fifty yards in diameter.
