SCAWBY, a parish in the eastern division of the wapentake of MANLEY, parts of LINDSEY, county of LINCOLN, 2 miles (W. S.W.) from Glandford-Bridge, containing, with the township of Sturton, 838 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Stow, and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £7, and in the patronage of Sir H. Nelthorpe, Bart. The church is dedicated to St. Hibald. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. A free school, founded in 1705, by Richard Nelthorpe, is endowed with land now let for £30 a year, for the instruction of the children of the Nelthorpe tenantry.
