SEATON-CAREW, a township in the parish of STRANTON, north-eastern, division of STOCKTON ward county palatine of DURHAM, 10 miles (N. E. by N.) from Stockton upon Tees, containing 312 inhabitants. Here was a chapel, dedicated to St. Thomas a Becket, but it has been long since demolished, there being no traces of it. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. The village is considerably resorted to during the bathing-season, and contains respectable public, as well as private, accommodation for the visitors. The beach is smooth, and the sands firm and level to an extent of several miles, so that the convenience for bathing machines is exceedingly good. A priory of Gilbertine canons, subordinate to that of Sempringham, founded here by Alan de Wilton, was valued, at the dissolution, at £11. 2. 8. per annum.
