SELLING, a parish in the hundred of BOUGHTON-under-BLEAN, lathe of SCRAY, county of KENT, 4 miles (S. S. E.) from Faversham, containing 573 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Canterbury, rated in the king's books at £6. 13. 4., endowed with £200 private benefaction, and £200 royal bounty, and in the patronage of Lord Sondes, The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is partly in the early and partly in the later style of English architecture; On Shottendon Hill is an ancient fortification of an irregular form, thought by some to be Roman, and by others Danish; but it seems probable that it was a work of the former, from the extensive Roman intrenchments still visible in a wood two miles to the south-east of it: there is also a tumulus in the neighbourhood.
