SHANKLIN, a parish in the liberty of EAST-MEDINA, Isle of Wight division of the county of SOUTHAMPTON, 9 miles (S. E.) from Newport, containing 155 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, annexed to the rectory of Bonchurch, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester. In the church is an oak chest, curiously carved, with a Latin inscription, dated 1512, and the arms of the see, the gift of Thomas Silksted, Prior of Winchester. At a short distance from the village is a prodigious chasm, called Shanklin Chine, which, extending a considerable way inland from the coast, and being overgrown with shrubs and brushwood, forms a picturesque and extremely romantic scene.
