SHAWELL, a parish in the hundred of GUTHLAXTON, county of LEICESTER, 3 miles (S.) from Lutterworth, containing 209 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Leicester, and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £9, and in the patronage of the Crown. The church is dedicated to All Saints. A free grammar school for children of this parish and that of Newton, founded here by John Eckingtoii, has an endowment of £20 per annum, with a house and garden for the master. The founder also erected an almshouse for six poor men.
