SHERE, a parish in the second division of the hundred of BLACKHEATH, county of SURREY, 6 miles (E. by S.) from Guildford, containing 1077 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Surrey, and diocese of Winchester, rated in the king's books at £26. 1. 5. The Bishop of Winchester, by lapse, presented in 1805. The church, dedicated to St. James, is principally in the early style of English architecture, with a tower and spire rising from the centre. There are two places of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. Courts leet and baron are occasionally held by the lord of the manor, William Bray, Esq., the county historian. Thomas Galton, in 1758, gave £400 for teaching poor children. There is a smaller bequest, for a like purpose, the gift of Mr. Duncomb, in 1746.
