SHIMPLING, a parish in the hundred of Diss, county of NORFOLK, 3 miles (N. E.) from Diss, containing 179 inhabitants. The living is a discharged rectory, in the archdeaconry of Norfolk, and diocese of Norwich, rated in the king's books at £ 10. 13. 4. P.J.Harrison, Esq. was patron in 1821. The church, dedicated to St. George, was erected early in the thirteenth century, but the steeple appears to be of more ancient date; a representation of St. George and the Dragon, and the arms of the Shimplings, are carved on the front of it.
