SHIPBORNE, a parish in the hundred of WROTHAM,
lathe of AYLESFORD, county of KENT, 3 miles
(N.) from Tonbridge, containing 402 inhabitants. The
living is a donative, in the patronage of John Simpson,
Esq. The church is dedicated to St. Giles the Abbot,
on whose festival (Sep. 1st) a fair is still held. Christopher
Smart, a poet and miscellaneous writer of some
eminence, was born here in 1722, and died in a state of
derangement in 1771.
