SHIRE-NEWTON, a parish in the upper division
of the hundred of CALDICOTT, county of MONMOUTH,
containing 689 inhabitants, of which number, 261 are
in the village of Shire-Newton, 4 miles (W.) from
Chepstow. The living is a discharged rectory, in the
archdeaconry and diocese of Llandaff, rated in the king's
books at £9. 8. !., and in the patronage of the Crown.
The church is dedicated to St. Thomas a Becket.
