SHOTLEY, a parish in the eastern division of TINDALE ward, county of NORTHUMBERLAND, comprising the chapelry of High Blanchland, and the townships of Newbiggin and Shotley, and containing 1090 inhabitants, of which number, 609 are in the township of Shotley, 10 miles (S. E.) from Hexham. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry of Northumberland, and diocese of Durham, endowed with £10 per annum and £200 private benefaction, and £400 royal bounty, and in the patronage of Lord Crewe's trustees. The church, dedicated to St. Andrew, is situated upon an eminence about a mile and a half from the village of Shotley: in the cemetery is an elegant mausoleum in memory of the Hopper family. Here are several extensive and productive lead and coal mines. A school is supported by annual contributions amounting to about £20.
