SNENTON, a parish in the southern division of the wapentake of THURGARTON, county of NOTTINGHAM, f of a mile (B.) from Nottingham, containing 1212 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry of Nottingham, and diocese of York, endowed with £600 royal bounty, and £200 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of Earl Manvers. The church is dedicated to St. Stephen. The village, which a few years ago consisted of a few scattered houses, and contained not more than two hundred and fifty inhabitants, now presents a most respectable appearance, new streets and many elegant houses having been recently erected. The county asylum for lunatics is in this parish: it is a large brick building, capable of accommodating one hundred and thirty patients; the establishment is well conducted, and is supported by voluntary contri; butions. In the neighbourhood are some curious ex? cavations in the stone rock, used as dwellings.
