STANTON (ST-QUINTIN), a parish in the hundred of MALMESBURY, county of WILTS, 4 miles (N. by W.) from Chippenham, containing 285 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Wilts, and diocese of Salisbury, rated in the king's books at £10. 5. 7-i and in the patronage of the Earl of Radnor. The church, dedicated to St. Giles, has lately received an addition of eighty free sittings, the Incorporated Society for the enlargement of churches and chapels having granted £40 towards defraying the expense. Good slate, limestone, and a very hard blue stone for building, abound within the parish. Here were formerly the ruins of an ancient castle, but they have entirely been removed within the last few years.
