STEEPING (GREAT), a parish in the Wold division of the wapentake of CANDLESHOE, parts of LINDSEY, county of LINCOLN, 3 miles (E. S. E.) from Spilsby, containing 278 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, united to the rectory of Firsby, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £7. IS. 4. The church is dedicated to All Saints. There is a place of worship forWesleyan Methodists. The parish is bounded on the south by the river Steeping. The remains of an old mansion, surrounded by a moat, are now occupied as a farm-house, and a moated enclosure in the neighbourhood is said to have been the site of a monastery.
