STEPHENS-by-SALTASH (ST.), a parish in the southern division of the hundred of EAST, county of CORNWALL, 1 mile (W. by S.) from Saltash, containing, with the borough of Saltash, 2873 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Cornwall, and diocese of Exeter, rated in the king's books at £26, endowed with £15 per annum private benefaction, £200 royal bounty, and £700 parliamentary grant. Thomas Edwards, Esq. was patron in 1815. In this parish are considerable remains of the ancient castle of Trematon, in a beautiful situation on the banks of the Lyner; the area covered more than an acre of ground, and was enclosed by embattled walls; the keep is situated on the summit of a conical elevation, and is approached by a circular arched doorway; the principal gateway consists of three arches, supporting a square embattled tower, containing a museum for natural curiosities; this castle was erected prior to the Conquest.
