STOKE-by-CLARE, a parish in the hundred of RISBRIDGE, county of SUFFOLK, 2 miles (S. W. by W.) from Clare, containing 746 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry of Sudbury, and diocese of Norwich, endowed with £ 1200 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of Sir W. B. Rush, Bart. The church is dedicated to St. Augustine. The navigable river Stour passes on the south of the parish. Sir Gervaise Elwes, Bart., in 1678, bequeathed a rent-charge of £ 10 for teaching poor children.
