STOKE (SOUTH), a parish in the hundred of DONCHESTER, county of OXFORD, 4 miles (S. by W.) from Wallingford, containing, with the chapelry of Woodcote, 739 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Oxford, rated in the king's books at £12. 16. 0., endowed with £600 private benefaction, £200 royal bounty, and £600 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Dean and Canons of Christ Church, Oxford. The church is dedicated to St. Andrew. There is a place of worship for Independents. Ten poor children are taught for £ 14.7.8. a year, arising from a bequest by the Rev. Griffith Higgs,D.D., in 1659.
