STOKE (SOUTH), a parish in the hundred of BATH-FORUM, county of SOMERSET, 2 miles (S.) from Bath, containing 258 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, with the perpetual curacy of Moncton- Combe annexed, in the archdeaconry of Bath, and diocese of Bath and Wells, rated in the king's books at £7. 18. 9., endowed with £200 private benefaction, and £200 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Rev. John Wood. The church is dedicated to St. James. The river Avon and the Radford canal run through the parish; the former is crossed by a bridge near its junction with the Kennet.
