STOKE-BRUERNE, a parish in the hundred of CLELEY, county of NORTHAMPTON, 3 miles (E. N. E.) from Towcester, containing, with the chapelry of ShuttJehanger, 732 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Northampton, and diocese of Peterborough, rated in the king's books at £30, and in the patronage of the Principal and Fellows of Brasenose College, Oxford, The church is dedicated to St. Mary. The Grand Junction canal passes through a tunnel two miles long, partly in this parish, and partly in that of Blisworth. Ten pounds a year, the bequest of Elizabeth Prowse, is applied in support of a day and a Sunday school chiefly maintained by the Dowager Lady Mordaunt.
